The United States is experiencing the worst flu season in 15 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Influenza activity has surged to levels not seen since the swine flu pandemic in 20092. The CDC reports that 24 million illnesses, 310,000 hospitalizations, and 13,000 deaths have been attributed to the flu this season.

The flu has hit particularly hard in states like Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Maine, where flu activity is classified as “very high”. Hospitals and healthcare providers are overwhelmed with flu patients, and some schools have even had to close temporarily due to high absentee rates.
