Researchers at Karolinska Institute have identified biomarkers in the blood that are linked to severe respiratory symptoms in long COVID patients.
These proteins are associated with inflammatory pathways involved in cell death and lung damage, similar to patterns seen in other severe pulmonary disorders. The study analyzed blood samples from 265 patients who had COVID-19 early in the pandemic, before vaccines were available, and found that those with long COVID had elevated levels of specific proteins, while recovered patients did not.
The findings could lead to new diagnostic tools and targeted treatments for long COVID, which currently lacks specific biomarkers and therapies.
The next phase of research aims to investigate lung and gastrointestinal tissue to determine the source of these proteins and whether lingering inflammation or tissue damage contributes to long COVID symptoms.
Frontline Doctors have been advocating for all patients and their different issues concerning COVID. Many patients who are still suffering from fatigue and chronic cough years after a COVID diagnosis were left in the dark by mainstream health care researchers. Frontline Doctors and our researchers never stopped looking for potential links between the symptoms and the source and years later scientific sources are starting to confirm what was previously unknown.
There are key biomarkers which can be linked to the increase in Long COVID symptoms in some patients and now that we know what these biomarkers are we can move forward with a long term cure. In the short term there are still preventative measure which are available to ease long COVID symptoms, and your Frontline Doctor will be glad to help keep you up to speed with new treatments as they become available.
